TMS Implementation Stories...

One of the keys to ShippersEdge TMS track record is that we think outside the box AND beyond the truck. Many of our customizations do not involve the technicalities of routing a shipment.  Instead it involves solutions to problems that precede or succeed the shipment going out the door.   Sometimes it involves providing functionality their ERP cannot provide.  It is rare that we cannot solve a challenge that our client presents to us.

Here are some examples of some of our successes through custom processes and thinking outside the truck and box:

  • Non-Traditional Integrations

It is quite common for us to deal with non-traditional integrations.

For example, we have a client using an ERP designed for mid-size companies.  Their ERP was able to import payables.  But the problem was they the client needed additional data and controls the ERP Accounts Payable system could not import.

ShippersEdge TMS devised a custom integration that brought the data back into their system and allowed them to manage it within other User interfaces.

  • Serving as a Bridge Between Two Software Systems

We have had another client that had an Order Management system that could not send any preliminary data to their WMS or ERP for shipment planning purposes.

But we were able to connect with both.  We created a bridge that allowed them to send information to their WMS for planning purposes before the order was finalized (and of course sending updates as it went along)

  • Messy or Missing Data in Your ERP

Sometimes the data in the records in the ERP system are incomplete or inaccurate.  This is a quite common problem.  We have multiple ways to receive, glean, modify, and perfect data.

  • No Integration Capability… No Problem

Often Clients do not have any way to integrate their ERP directly with ShippersEdge.  Either their system cannot support any data exchanges, or perhaps their IT department cannot allocate the resources to facilitate it at that time.  We have solved this problem numerous times by providing them with the ability to take data via exported reports and import it into ShippersEdge.  Some might say that is easy.  But how about changes to the order and cancellation.  We have creative methods to work through that.

  • Easier Acquisitions

We have multiple clients that have acquired several companies over time.   They each had situations where each of their companies operated independently and each on their own IT platform.   They gave us two challenges….

    1. Roll up the activity of each company and give them reports and access to data so they can have companywide reports. wide reports.
    2. Get each of the companies to use it and work together.

Creating a system that would accomplish #1 was easy.  Getting everyone to use it was the challenge.  We did that by providing custom configurations for each company and making it easier for each of them to do their job.

  • Special Purpose Applications

One of our very first clients was a company that operates quarries.  Trucks come in and they load them with dirt, gravel, and aggregate and send them on their way.  It was up to the guys with the big front-end loaders to keep track of what went out and fill out paperwork for each one.  Now layer in that the locations of the quarries are as much as 60 miles away from the headquarters.  What a slow, inaccurate, and inefficient process.

Using a low-cost tablet we developed a custom app that the Loaders could check the trucks in and out.  The kicker was that these guys in the yard…. they were big guys with big fingers…often wearing gloves.  We had to make sure the app was not just simple to use,  but that it had buttons and pull-downs big enough for them. We love to help companies help think outside the box.  And outside the truck.  We had a client that leased out reusable Containers that stored chemicals.  They needed not just a way to route and pick them up.  They needed a way to check them in when they were returned.  We developed an interface that allowed their dock personnel to grade them and check them.

    Problems solved.

  • And Another Special Application

Another example of helping a client think beyond the truck.   We had a client that leased out reusable Containers that stored chemicals.  They needed more than just a way to route and pick ups and deliveries.   They needed a way to check in the containers when they were returned.

We developed an interface which allowed their dock personnel to grade them and check them.  They loved it so much they actually used ShippersEdge to originate all transactions.

  • Automation Done Properly

The key to automation is to do so without creating chaos.  That is quite a challenge.  From planning and routing to exception management and freight payment, ShippersEdge can automate many of your processes.

Automation can be done without chaos, thanks to our proven approach towards automation.

  • They’ve Gone Paperless

Seems that when it comes to shipping there is a lot of paperwork.  We have multiple clients that have gone virtually paperless on their shipment process.  We have clients that have eliminated paper invoices…and even eliminated carrier invoices 100%.

  • Eliminate the Freight Payment Company

Even if you can’t eliminate invoices, ShippersEdge has helped several clients eliminate the need and expense of a freight payment company to audit and process your payable, with an automated process that provides greater accuracy, more efficiency, better reporting and more timely processing

  • Deep Visibility and Exception Management

We have a client that does 90% of its shipping in two short periods.  The shipments are going to non-commercial businesses and are time-critical.  They had a high percentage of delays and refused shipments.

We configured ShippersEdge to provide intensive tracking, and machine learning and predictive analysis to flag potential and actual shipment problems.  Then we made it easy for them to manage those exceptions through automation and User Interfaces.

  • Helping Employees Follow the Rules

One of the most common issues we get from clients is that they cannot get their branch or other locations to follow the rules.

We have addressed this issue for many clients, helping them improve compliance by modifying interfaces to make it easier for them, build-in controls, and hold them accountable.

  • Whose Responsibility Is it, anyway?

When we mention responsibility, we are not just talking about operational responsibility.  We are also talking about financial responsibility.  We can apply costs to general ledger codes and cost centers using even the most complex cost allocation and assignment rules.
